KEP Italia Care & Maintenance
How to clean, store and inspect your KEP Italia helmet to keep it in the best possible condition.
Cleaning your helmet
For everyday cleaning, wipe the outer shell with a soft microfiber cloth lightly dampened with lukewarm water. Dry with a soft cloth afterwards and allow the helmet to air dry completely before storing.
| Part | How to clean |
|---|---|
| Outer shell | Soft microfiber cloth with lukewarm water. Dry immediately after. Never use chemical cleaners, solvents, ammonia-based products or abrasive materials. |
| Inner liner | Remove before washing. Hand wash with lukewarm water and mild soap, or machine wash at 30°C. Air dry completely before reinstalling. See also: KEP Italia Liners Explained. |
| Chin strap & buckle | Damp cloth with mild soap. Rinse off soap residue and allow to air dry naturally. Check regularly for signs of wear or damage. |
| Ventilation channels | Soft brush or low-pressure compressed air. Remove accumulated dust and debris to maintain proper airflow. |
Liner care
The KEP Italia liner is removable and designed to be washed regularly. Remove it from the helmet before cleaning. Hand washing in lukewarm water with mild soap works well for routine cleaning; for a more thorough wash, machine washing at 30°C is also suitable.
After washing, allow the liner to air dry completely - never use a dryer or place it near direct heat. Only reinstall once fully dry.
If your liner is worn or no longer fits correctly, it can be replaced separately without replacing the entire helmet. The right liner size also matters for safety - a liner that is too large or too small affects how the helmet sits on your head. For sizing and compatibility information, see our KEP Italia Liners Explained guide or the Size Guide.
Caring for leather and python finishes
Some KEP Italia helmets feature natural leather or python finishes that require extra care. These materials are more sensitive to moisture, heat and cleaning products than standard finishes.
Do
Clean with a soft, slightly damp cloth only. Allow the helmet to dry naturally if it becomes wet. Accept slight colour variations over time - these are part of the character of natural materials.
Avoid
Aggressive cleaning products of any kind. Prolonged exposure to direct sunlight. Radiators, heating vents or other heat sources. Leaving the helmet in a hot vehicle.
Storing your helmet
Proper storage protects the materials and shape of your helmet between rides. Store in a cool, dry place - away from direct sunlight, excessive heat and humidity. Use the original KEP Italia helmet bag when possible, and avoid placing heavy objects on top of the helmet or leaving it where it can fall or be knocked over.
When travelling, always transport your helmet in a protective bag. Avoid leaving it in a hot car - temperatures inside a parked vehicle can rise quickly and accelerate material degradation.
Regular inspection
Take a few moments to inspect your helmet regularly - ideally before each ride. Catching early signs of wear or damage helps you decide when maintenance or replacement is needed.
After a fall
A helmet can sustain internal damage even when there is no visible damage to the outer shell. The energy-absorbing materials inside may be compromised in ways that are not visible from the outside.
If your helmet has been involved in a significant impact, inspect it carefully and replace it where appropriate - in line with the manufacturer's recommendations. Never assume a helmet is still safe simply because it looks undamaged.
For more detail on what to do after a fall and how helmets are tested, see the KEP Italia Safety Guide.
When to replace your helmet
Besides impacts, normal ageing affects helmet materials over time. Exposure to sunlight, heat, humidity and perspiration can gradually reduce protective performance - even without a visible incident.
KEP Italia recommends replacing helmets in line with their official guidance, after significant impacts, or whenever there is uncertainty about their condition. If you are unsure whether your helmet or liner needs replacing, we are happy to help you assess it.
For guidance on liner replacement specifically, see KEP Italia Liners Explained. For safety-related questions, the KEP Italia Safety Guide covers certifications, testing and what to do after a fall.
Frequently asked questions
Yes. The KEP liner can be machine washed at 30°C with a mild detergent. Remove it from the helmet first and allow it to air dry completely before reinstalling. Do not use a dryer or place it near direct heat.
No. Avoid chemical cleaners, solvents, ammonia-based products and abrasive materials on the outer shell. Use only a soft microfiber cloth with lukewarm water. For helmets with leather or python finishes, the same rule applies - a slightly damp cloth only.
Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and heat. Use the original KEP helmet bag where possible. Avoid stacking heavy objects on top of the helmet, and never leave it in a hot vehicle.
After a significant impact, yes. Internal damage is not always visible from the outside. If the helmet has absorbed a serious fall, inspect it carefully and replace it where appropriate. When in doubt, do not continue using it - contact us or consult the KEP Italia Safety Guide for more information.

In many cases, yes. If only the liner is worn or the wrong size, replacing it separately is a cost-effective solution - provided the shell and the rest of the helmet are still in good condition. See our KEP Italia Liners Explained guide for sizing and compatibility information.
